Description
This iconic lounge armchair Warren Platner for Knoll International represents the peak of sculptural American modernism. The chair made its debut in mid 1960s and still celebrated as a hallmark of 20th-century design. This particular set dates to April 25, 1972, as confirmed by the original Knoll production label beneath the seat. A one-owner piece until now, it remains remarkably well-preserved—retaining all original components.
This listing is for a single yellow chair. The orange chair with ottoman and coffee table pictured are sold separately. Inquire if you are interested in purchasing the matching pieces.
The chair’s signature steel wire frame is constructed from dozens of precisely welded rods. Finished in a darkened bronze tone which Knoll calls “Metallic.” The frame is at once structural and ornamental, fluid yet monumental. It reflects Platner’s singular ability to merge modernist restraint with decorative flourish.
“A classic is something that, every time you look at it, you accept it as it is, and you see no way of improving it.”
—Warren Platner
Upholstered in its original vivid yellow textile, the cushions offer a bold chromatic counterpoint to the Metallic bronze base. The fabric maintains a sunny hue even after all these decades.
This chair offers an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire a verified, early 1970s example. The brilliant original upholstery, provenance, integrity, and visual impact make this an especially desirable piece.
For collectors of American design, fans of Platner’s sculptural vocabulary, or interiors seeking a centerpiece with presence and pedigree, this lounge chair and ottoman deliver the perfect intersection of comfort and legacy. A true investment in design history.
