Description
An exceptional and increasingly hard-to-find set of eight Model 71 dining chairs by Niels Otto Møller for J.L. Møller Møbelfabrik, retaining the original manufacturer’s label. Complete sets of eight are considerably scarcer to the market than the four- and six-chair groupings most commonly found today, having more often been split or reduced over decades of use. Møller remains one of the most collected names in Danish Modern furniture, and the Model 71 is counted among his most refined dining chair designs, prized for a structural elegance that reads as sculpture as much as seating.
The design is instantly recognizable: a sculpted, shield-form crest rail that curves gently forward, carried on tapered round legs whose back pair sweeps in one continuous, unbroken line into the seat rail. At the leg-to-seat junction, a hand-finished sculpted block marks the transition, a signature detail reflecting the exacting joinery for which Møller’s workshop was renowned, and a hallmark of the hand-finishing standard in the best Danish workshops of the period.
The teak on this set is exceptionally dense and richly figured, with a deep, saturated patina that reads closer to rosewood than the lighter, more open-grained teak typically seen on chairs of this era. The result is a set with unusual visual weight, warmth, and presence, versatile enough to anchor either a teak or a rosewood dining table without feeling mismatched to either.
Seats are upholstered in the original black naugahyde and present well under typical light. The webbing beneath has relaxed somewhat and is no longer taut, though the chairs remain fully functional and comfortable for daily use. The naugahyde does not fully regain its original sheen after cleaning and conditioning. One seat has a small pinhole with an accompanying scratch, and there is minor scuffing across a few of the others. The frames present well overall, with only fine surface scratches near a few crest-rail corners and a shallow surface blemish on one leg, visible mainly under direct or raking light. A small number of chairs show old drip-mark discoloration on the backs and evidence of prior dent repair to the legs, stable and unobtrusive.
This is an honest, all-original set retaining its vintage upholstery throughout, ideal for purists and collectors who value authenticity and originality over restoration, and for buyers seeking a genuinely complete set of eight, a configuration rarely available in this condition and quantity.
