Description
Nearly 7ft tall mid century modern Cubist batik. A melange of contorted human and animal figures reminiscent of Picasso’s famous “Guernica.” The piece borrows from Picasso’s abstracted geometrical forms. This piece is a deviation from “Guernica” in that is a colorful celebration of a culture rather than a dark snapshot of a people’s destruction. The rhythmic composition depicts many faces, chickens, donkeys, cows and trees all harmoniously coexisting in a vibrant multi-tiered landscape. Blocks of red, sage green and royal blue move the eye through the field of violets and indigo. The image is created from a wax and dye technique on textile. The batik process is native to Indonesia and often used to depict tribal imagery and decorative textiles. This piece is fabric stretched on board and housed in a white lacquer wood frame.
