Description
Vintage 1968 Expressionist portrait by American painter, Gino Hollander. There is something about this solemn portrait that lures you in. Rendered in gestural strokes reminiscent of Franz Kline, the figure cuts across the austere white. The stark field of white is tempered with an ethereal wash of blue and ochre hues. Head bowed, expressionless, it is difficult to decipher gender or mood. Perhaps this is why the viewer’s gaze draws deeper, longer glares. Mysterious, beautiful, sublime. There is more emotion dancing around this canvas than there is paint. The original canvas painting is housed in a dark wood frame, signed and dated, 10/68.
Eugene Hollander’s signature is appears in the lower right corner. The artist (Eugene F. Hollander) is just as captivating as his work. Born in 1924, Hollander found success in both film and painting. During the 1960s Hollander became engrossed in the New York Expressionists Movement. During the 1960s The Hollander Gallery in Greenwich Village sold works to Steve McQueen, Jacqueline Kennedy, Norman Rockwell and Ralph Lauren.
