Description
Vintage 1950s-1960s painting by G. Thomas featuring African figures along the water’s edge. We are saying African, they could just as well be situated in the Caribbean or South America. Several people are gathered near boats. Baskets on their heads and in their hands indicate that they may be trading goods. Two large boats take center stage at the foreground while two more are tucked away in the back. Thomas deviates from the norm with his choice of dramatic yellow and purple colors for the sky. It’s as if night and day are colliding in this surreal seascape. The atypical colors give the image a mystical quality as if he’s rendering a dream or memory. The painting is housed in a recently repainted white frame. The artist’s signature is present at lower right. The frame was recently restored with new white paint, dust jacket and hanging wire.
