Description
Well Alice, you chased that white rabbit and it brought you here, to this colossal floor lamp where logic and proportion have fallen sloppy dead.
Nearly beyond description, but these three words come close. Magical, mystical, whimsical. This truly one-of-a-kind masterpiece is going to be excruciatingly hard to let go. Everyone at FMV is already getting depressed and sentimental just thinking about it being sold and taken away.
The prehistoric looking lampshade is actually a 3-foot wide, solid burl knot. This naturally formed, bell shaped wood formation has not been carved or altered from its original state. There is however a hole at the top which allows access to the fixture. Metal rods flare out from the center of the fixture to both secure the shade and mimic the look of mushroom gills. The effect is both clever, practical and artistically harmonious to the theme. Four light fixtures provide for ample down-light and the cavity inside the shade is accommodating to even the largest of globe style bulbs.
The column “trunk” of the lamp is a real tree, minus the bark. The smooth, golden wood stem looks petrified rather than weathered. Along with the rooted base, these elements conspire to create the convincing illusion of a real, giant, illuminated mushroom.
Unsigned and undated, we estimate this work of art was created in the late 70’s to early 80’s in California.
