Description
Layers of seat covers were peeled back to reveal the original green fabric on these time capsule chairs. It is quite a lucky strike to find the original fabric in excellent condition. Over the decades the owners updated the seats with new fabric, simply covering what was there before. The original fabric was subsequently preserved beneath the layers like a true archeological relic.
Designed by Henry P. Glass in the 1960. The American made chairs are heavily influenced by Mid-Century Modern Scandinavian design. In fact, they quite closely resemble Koefoed Hornslet’s “Eva Chair.”
The elongated backrests create a graceful vertical emphasis that lends the chairs an architectural presence within a room, while gently contoured backs provide ergonomic support. The sculpted rear uprights extend above and curve over the backrest in a distinctive horn like form, creating a visually dynamic silhouette that frames the sitter while introducing subtle movement to the otherwise restrained profile.
Henry P. Glass became known for adapting the warmth and material honesty of Danish Modern design for the American market, producing furniture that balanced sculptural clarity with everyday functionality. These chairs exemplify that approach, pairing solid wood construction with refined proportions and thoughtful detailing.
The retention of the original green upholstery adds authenticity and visual depth, offering a period correct contrast to the warmth of the wood while reinforcing the chairs’ mid century provenance. High back examples such as these were designed to provide both comfort and formality, making them particularly well suited to architectural dining environments.
Mid-Century Modern purists certainly appreciate the original kiwi colored seats.
