Description
Incredibly textured mixed media painting by American artist, Irma Baker. The abstract painting has no obvious form or subject, but the materials and technique evoke the feeling of landscape. Baker is almost gardening with paint on canvas. Her composition is comprised of impasto painting intermixed with birch bark, burlap, soil and seeds. It is a remarkable melange of natural elements. Dynamic strokes capture the volatility of nature itself. Unlike nature, this chaos is forever captured in state. The viewer becomes a quiet observer of nature’s explosive ability to create and destroy. In fact, it’s quite ambiguous whether this is a scene of destruction or a sort of genesis. Seeds in soil can certainly symbolize a birthing of new life, new energy. The painting is signed and believed to be painted in the 1970s.
