Description
This incredible G-Plan sofa was purchased new in Glasgow, Scotland in 1970. We acquired from the original owners who kept them in pristine condition. Designed by KM Wilkins for G-Plan of England, this line is appropriately named the “Tulip Group”. The “Tulip” design is demonstrated by the rosewood panels which are molded in curves that mimic a blossoming flower. Offered almost exclusively in teak, this rosewood set is truly a rare find. The rich, amber-red panels are perfectly complimented by the chrome hardware and velvet fabric. The luxuriously soft velvet is in amazing the condition. The color is difficult to describe, but in our opinion, it’s a cross between olive-green and taupe-brown. Of course the refraction of light on velvet can magnify or minimize the tones and highlights depending on the angle and environment.
The vintage KM Wilkins couch has its original Magnum Orbit chrome casters that function perfectly. The sofa rolls effortlessly and are ideal for carpeted spaces.
Restoration / Condition:
These KM Wilkins G-Plan couch was found in excellent condition. However, upon inspection we realized that the original support straps had hardened and deteriorated. To allow installation of new webbing, the couch was completely disassembled and the decking fabric was un-stapled and peeled back. Our upholstery team installed rows of industrial 3″ wide elastic strapping to ensure proper support for decades of use. The original foam cushioning was in excellent condition and allowed to remain. Each rosewood “tulip” section and piece of chrome hardware was professionally cleaned and polished before reassembly
