Description

A superb example of Danish design at its most disciplined: clean lines, honest joinery, and teak allowed to speak for itself. J.L. Møller Møbelfabrik was founded in Denmark in 1944 and became one of the most respected names in Danish cabinetmaking during the mid-century period, prized for restrained, architecturally rigorous forms and superb craftsmanship — the firm’s dining chairs, in particular, remain some of the most widely collected of the era. This extension dining table bears the manufacturer’s original brass label to the underside, confirming its Danish manufacture.

The table’s standout feature is its draw-leaf mechanism: both leaves are stored beneath the main top and slide out on integrated runners, so extending the table requires no separate leaves to store or hunt down. Fully retracted, the top presents as a single continuous surface; drawn open, it expands from a compact 58 3/4″ to a generous 104 1/2″ without altering the table’s proportions or requiring extra floor space when not in use. This is one of the more sought-after mechanisms in Danish dining furniture for exactly that reason.

The rectangular top sits on gently tapered, cylindrical legs that narrow toward the floor, a signature Møller detail that lightens the visual weight of an otherwise substantial piece. Teak grain runs the length of the top in a bookmatched pattern, with the tapered legs cut from solid teak to match.

Condition: this table shows honest wear consistent with decades of use. The draw-leaf mechanism functions smoothly. There are scattered dents and light scratches across the top, most visible only in raking light. The leaves have taken on a lighter, more golden tone than the main top through natural sun exposure, a common and expected occurrence with teak veneer stored or displayed differently over the years, and each leaf shows faint circular marks at the outer corners left by felt pads once placed beneath the top by a previous owner. None of this affects structural integrity or usability, and the overall patina is entirely in keeping with a well-loved piece of its age.
