Stunning early Danish Modern teak coffee table by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard Nielsen for France and Son. The masterful design features a lower caned shelf, suspended by brass hardware. The chic silhouette and choice of materials exemplifies Danish design’s ability to say so much with so little. The coffee table has been refinished, breathing new life and beauty into the piece. The France & Son emblem is embedded in the wood beneath the table along with a brass plate reading “Illums Bolighus, Kobenhavn.” Kobenhavn is the Danish word for Copenhagen. The table is also stamped “Made in Denmark.” This is a fine, collector’s grade table. The heirloom quality table is a functional work of art sure to be appreciated by Danish design aficiandos.

Illums Bolighus, the prestigious Danish design retailer, and France & Søn, the iconic mid-century furniture manufacturer, are connected through the history of Scandinavian design. Illums Bolighus was a primary high-end retail outlet that showcased and sold pieces produced by France & Søn during the golden age of Danish Modern. During the 1950s and 1960s, Illums Bolighus in Copenhagen acted as a key venue for showcasing premium Danish furniture, which included France & Søn’s innovative, high-quality teak designs

Condition: The vintage coffee table has been refinished. The top has been refinished but some residual marks and uneven color may appear in forced lighting. The bottom shelf has some minor marks on the wood and the brass brackets holding the shelf have some cosmetic age wear.
