Description

This Danish modern teak cabinet by Poul Hundevad has been reimagined as a low, horizontal record cabinet and bookcase. The original case was turned on its side and raised on slender tapered legs, so its proportions now read as a long, airy console with a strong architectural rhythm.

Three tall open bays run across the left side, divided by full-height teak partitions that give the piece a clean, almost gallery-like cadence. The bays hold standard 12 inch LPs. Thanks to the cabinet’s slim profile, the jackets sit just slightly proud of the front edge, which makes flipping through and pulling records especially easy.

On the right, a single hinged door with its original brass escutcheon and working key opens to a more intricate interior. A cross shelf creates two upper cubbies, and a row of slim vertical slots below is well suited to files, magazines, smaller books, or audio accessories. Records are stored in the open bays only, as LPs will not fit behind the closed door.

The teak veneer is well figured throughout. The door shows a particularly lively, flowing grain that is now set horizontally across the face. Brass hinges and fittings complete the original Danish hardware.

The case retains the clean slab construction and crisp edge banding typical of Hundevad’s case work from Vamdrup, Denmark. The piece works beautifully as a record cabinet, a bookcase, or a slim media console. Its shallow depth also makes it ideal for hallways and narrower rooms, or behind a sofa.

Please note: This piece has been altered from its original configuration. The cabinet has been reoriented and the legs are a later addition.

Condition:

The cabinet is in good vintage condition with minor flaws consistent with age and use. The top has two professionally filled former holes and two small dents along the top left front edge. There are a few small dents at the bottom left corner and one deeper dent on the second shelf. Inside, a line of discoloration remains where a shelf was previously positioned. There is light scattered surface discoloration overall. The structure is sound and the door, lock, and key are fully functional.
