Vintage 1978 Tobia Scarpa for Knoll Bastiano Oak Black Leather Sofa

Out of stock

Description

Vintage 1978 Tobia Scarpa for Knoll Bastiano sofa. Black leather against this honeyed oak is the most visually pleasing combination option illustrated by The Bastiano sofa. The leather is thick and durable, yet soft and pliable. Design aficionados may recognize the similarities between this sofa and LeCorbusier’s LC3 sofa. Scapa’s design is a pastiche, with a twist. One may argue it’s a pastiche with an improvement over LeCorbusier. Scarpa aimed to create a sophisticated sofa that was as elegant as it is comfortable. We believe he achieved both objectives with his Bastiano sofa.

83.25” Long x 30.75” Deep x 26.5” High (14.5” seat height)

Condition: The frames were fully detailed top to bottom and the leather was cleaned and conditioned. Only minor imperfections remain (see pics).

The son of the famous Italian architect Carlo Scarpa, Tobia Scarpa trained in Venice before launching his career as a as a designer of lamps, furniture, and glass objects. In the early 1960s, he began to design modern furniture based on the principles of Le Corbusier. He and his wife Afra, designed for several of the biggest names in Italian design including Cassina and Gavina SpA,which his father directed.

With the 1968 acquisition of Gavina, the Bastiano Lounge collection was introduced to the Knoll catalog. The simple, comfortable design worked well with modern and traditional interiors alike and was one the most successful products of that time period. Although the Bastiano Lounge is no longer in production, several designers cite it as a major influence, most often complementing the successful harmony of soft cushions and a hard exoskeleton. Also introduced were Scarpa’s Pigreco Armchair and Andre Table.
