Description
Stunning life size masterfully carved wood black bear sculpture. The 6 foot bear was carved from a single, solid block of wood and finished with remarkable attention to detail. The bear stands upright, forever captured in a powerful roar. This is not your docile, cuddly teddy bear. The artist has realistically captured the powerful majesty of the revered animal. Rich textures and expressive modeling capture the richness of the bear’s fur and might of his claws. The statue is finished in the round, making it a marvel to view from all angles. The sculpture stands on a wood plinth base that is joined to the bear, as it was all carved from the same log. In this piece, wood itself is celebrated as a material. The grain to remain visible through areas of the stain.
This type of monumental carving draws from the tradition of early 20th‑century Black Forest and American lodge art, where wildlife sculptures were created to embody craftsmanship, storytelling, and a connection to nature. While the maker of this piece is unknown, the execution suggests a highly skilled artisan with a deep understanding of form and movement.
Whether placed beside a stone fireplace, anchoring an entry hall, or standing as a sculptural counterpoint in a sleek modern home, this bear commands attention without overwhelming the space. Its presence is both playful and sophisticated—an ideal acquisition for collectors who appreciate large‑scale figurative carving and unique decorative statements.
