Description
Rare large scale painting by Diana Hansen (Diana Hansen-Young). The painting is unusual for it’s scale. Hansen’s work from this period and into the 1980s typically do not exceed 20 inches. This portrait depicts a woman adorned in ornaments from the Hawaiian islands. Hansen’s work is nearly figural or portraits, focusing on women and girls from her adopted home of Hawaii. Hansen is a truly remarkable woman. The painting appears to be in it’s original Koa wood frame although that is not confirmed. In 1968, at 20 years old, Hansen became the youngest member of the Hawaiian state House of Representatives. Her career spanned visual art, politics, writing and music. Hansen was a prolific, much collected artist until arthritis forced her to retire her paintbrush in 1996. After retiring form painting, she went on to become a successful writer and playwright. Her musical “Mimi Le Duck” starring Eartha Kitt played at the New World Stages for 58 shows in 2006. Hansen continues to write today.
