Description
Drexel Profile walnut and pecan cocktail or coffee table, model K92, circa 1950s. The rectangular low profile and streamlined top features a distinct recessed under-shelf raised on angled square tapered legs. The slim space between the two-tiers keeps the overall look super sleek. There are no abrupt angles in Profile. The tapered legs curve gracefully into the tops of coffee table. The sculptured look is emphasized by a gentle curve that joins the top, extending slightly outward both in the front and back.
Drexel Furniture’s “Profile” line was designed by John van Koert and released in mid-1955. van Koert was already well-known at the time for designing Towle’s “Contour” line of cutlery, as well as Drexel “Projection.” He was also the director of “Design in Scandinavia,” a traveling museum exhibition that went around the United States showcasing pieces from 1954-1957 and helped spark the US interest in Danish design. The extensive Profile group has great poise and although contemporary in spirit, is adaptable and answers the demand for furniture that neither fakes the spirit of a past style nor merely expresses a designer’s whim.
